Happy 12th Birthday, Ursa

It is Thursday, May 30, 2002 at about 11.00 pm. Not too long until May 31, the 12th birthday of my beloved Bouvier Ursa. Ursa was our first Bouvier and the first dog we had that I considered "mine." We had Kronos, a small dog, before Ursa, but Kronos was more Sharon's dog. I loved him dearly and still miss him after all these years.

Ursa is an absolute sweetheart of a dog. She has a gentle soul and spirit. As far as I know, she has never intentionally hurt anything living. Ursa was my inspiration to start this great Bouvier adventure. Mailing list, Websites, and of course, 2 more Bouviers. It has been an exciting adventure.

Why the tribute at 12 years? Probably because that is getting quite old for a Bouvier.

I love you Ursa. Very much and please stick around with us for several more years.

Cancer!

In late December, we took Ursa to the vet for her annual checkup. We request that a complete blood panel be done. The results showed that Ursa was hyperthyroid which indicated a problem. We rushed her in to get an ultrasound as Dr. Sunshine recommended. It showed a tumor on the thyroid gland and a biopsy was taken. The tumor proved to be cancerous. We immediately made an appointment for a consultation at the Colorado State College of Veterinary Medicine in Ft. Collins, Colorado. The appointment was on Wednesday, January 17. The result of the exam was that the prognosis was very good and surgery to remove the tumor was recommended. Because of a cancellation, they could do the surgery the same day and we opted for that. The surgery went well and Ursa was kept in ICU overnight as a precaution. We picked her up the next day. She was very tired and obviously stressed from the surgery and staying overnight in a strange place. But by Friday, she was in good spirits and had much increased energy.

Because of the good prognosis, we hope to have Ursa in our family for at least another year or more.

We are very thankful to Dr. Sunshine and Dr. Clements at the
AllPets Clinic in Lafayette, CO and to all the wonderful folks at the Colorado State College of Veterinary Medicine.

Ursa's Home Page

This is Ursa, a fawn female Bouvier des Flandres. Ursa was my first Bouvier. I purchased her as a 40 pound puppy through a newspaper ad. I knew virtually nothing about Bouviers at the time, but lucked out. Ursa is a very mellow and sweet lady. I know the Bouvier purists out there will cringe at all the fur on Ursa's ears, but hey, we like it like that. When she feels in the mood, Ursa likes to wrestle with Magnum , our other Bouvier. These wrestling matches usually occur in front ot the TV when mommy and daddy are trying to watch something. Fortunately, the Bouvier wrestling match is much more entertaining than what is on TV.
